Hijackers steal cars off truck

2008-01-31 00:00

A truck transporting vehicles was hijacked and two vehicles were off-loaded from it in Pietermaritzburg yesterday morning.

The truck driver and his assistant were asleep in the truck cabin, on the N3 near the Hilton off-ramp, when two men woke them and told them they had seen people tampering with the trailer.

The driver and co-driver went to the back of the vehicle with the two men, and found no one there.

As they returned to the cab, they were held at gunpoint and ordered to get into a truck parked behind the carrier, said Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram.

A third armed man kept guard over the bound drivers and the two vehicles were driven to Mkondeni, where a Toyota Yaris and an Opel Corsa were off-loaded from the car-carrier.

The hijackers drove the cars and their truck away, leaving the drivers with the car-carrier and three other cars.

Police found the Toyota Yaris abandoned a short distance away from the crime scene. It is assumed that it ran out of fuel. The Opel Corsa is still missing. No arrests have been made.
