Hillcrest sharpen skills for new season

2014-03-13 00:00

DURBAN Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club are well into their pre-season training, with the KZNRU First Division League scrumming down in three weeks.

Villagers meet the competitive South Coast Warriors first up on April 5 and club captain Brian “Hard Man” Lewis has been laying down the law to his men at testing practice sessions.

Forward coach Colin Paterson and head coach Jeremy McLaren have been working closely with the big men and fleet-footed backs, moulding into what is expected to be a competitive and respected unit in the months ahead.

Based at the Durban Shongweni Club, the first and second teams are put through their paces on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the U19 development and third teams on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Practice on all these days is from 6 pm to 7.30 pm.

Tomorrow night the club participates in a pre-season knock-out tournament at Crusaders Rugby Club, Durban North.

It will be a tough ask for the lads from the top of the hill as the tournament is a Premier Division affair, but it will allow players and coaches the opportunity to see what is in the pot for the season, and give an indication of the side’s strengths and weaknesses before league kick-off.

New and past players are welcome to attend training and add some punch to the teams.
