Hilton blast Michaelhouse for a bonus

2013-02-14 00:00

HILTON beat Michaelhouse by six wickets in the 28th over, winning a bonus point in last night’s Sunfoil Series match.

This was the first game in the series in which there was good support from both sides. The chanting and singing, sometimes deafening, livened up proceedings and created a great atmosphere, but it failed to change the fortunes of the boys in red.

After winning the toss, Hilton elected to field first and captain Brian Pfaff would have been worried as Michaelhouse reached 50 without loss with a strong partnership between Justin Marshall and Bradley Roberts.

However, once Marshall was out in the 12th over, the next two batsmen fell quickly. There was a partial recovery until Roberts went out for 33 followed by Barrie Forrester, who scored 25 of 28 balls

The wickets fell regularly until Michaelhouse were all out for 125 with two overs to spare.

The batsmen largely got themselves out. Matt Lauryssen bowled the tightest line and ended up with three wickets for 17 in his eight overs. Campbell Caley also ended with three, but he was expensive.

Steven Reeves was the other bowler to take more than one wicket.

Pfaff stared with purpose, striking three fours in the first over, which got Hilton off to a quick start. He was out in the fourth over with the score on 25 and his total on 17.

The rate slowed when they lost their second wicket, but began accelerating as Luc Maingard and Alistair Rayner (23) added 44 for the third wicket, taking the score to 97 in the 18th over.

The fourth wicket fell when Maingard was caught on the boundary for 27 with eight runs still required for a win.

Michaelhouse used eight bowlers as they tried everything to prevent Hilton reaching the target with a bonus point, but it was not to be.

Most successful of the bowlers was Stevens with two wickets for 38 in his eight overs.

It was a deserved wicket by the side that had played the better cricket with bat and ball and in the field.

This has made Hilton a certainty to be in the final to be played on Thursday, 28 February.

Caley 3/36, Lauryssen 3/17)
