Hilton in rowing top five

2011-03-29 00:00

HILTON have staked a claim as one of the top five rowing school’s in the country, after their success at the SA Schools Rowing Championships in East London. They came home having won three golds, one silver and three bronze medals. Only one school, St Benedicts, with a rowing club that has four times the number of rowers than Hilton, did better.

Hilton is the only school from KwaZulu-Natal that has an active rowing club. Alexandra and Maritzburg College are affiliates of the SA Schools’ Rowing Association but neither is actively involved.

It was the Hilton U16 rowers who won the three gold medals. Kyle Schoonbee won the singles, breaking the record by seven seconds. He and Kyle Sinclair then won the pairs and the third gold was in the fours, where Emile Mclennan, Ben Johnstone, Wadey Dalton and Matt Gearing came home in front, kept in control by cox Rowan Peters.

The silver was won by Gearing who came in second behind Schoonbee. Bronze medals were won by Dalton in the U16 singles, giving Hilton a clean sweep in that race and then McLennan and Gearing in the U16 pairs. The third bronze was won by Cameron Coutts in the open singles.
