Hilton pupil only KZN player in U16 squad

2013-10-15 00:00

AN U16 high-performance rugby squad was announced by Saru (South African Rugby Union) after studying performances at the Grant Khomo week during July.

The players will be monitored and this will enhance training from U16 to U20 level, which will allow for the development of even more junior provincial players.

However, what is surprising is that only one player from KwaZulu-Natal was selected and he is Matthew Dahl, the Hilton College U16 scrumhalf.

KZN won all three games at the Grant Khomo week, although not against any of the major rugby powerhouses. After their first two wins against the Valke and Griffons, they should have been given a better game for the last match that was against the Limpopo Blue Bulls, which they also won. The latter has two players in the squad of 50 players.

Western Province has nine players, including two from each of Paarl Gym, Paarl Boys’ High School and Rondebosch. The next best representation is Eastern Province with six players, including two from Grey High School, despite Eastern Province losing their last match against the Blue Bulls.

Affies, with four players, is the school with the biggest representation, followed by Selborne and Grey College with three each.

It does appear as if KZN has been short-changed in this squad.
