Hilton woman dies after water-skiing at Midmar

2012-02-22 00:00

A HILTON family are mourning a 39-year-old woman who died after she fell while water-skiing on Midmar Dam.

Sandra Riekert leaves her husband Johan and three daughters, nine-year-old twins Cate and Abbegail and Hannah (12).

Family spokesperson Neil Riekert, Sandra’s brother-in-law, called her “a special person” who was “very loved”.

“This is very tragic for the family. She was a devoted and dedicated mother,” said Neil.

“Sandy was water-skiing at the dam and fell. She was clearly in trouble then. We only found out she had died at the hospital.”

Neil said Sandra, a trained nurse and midwife, ran a baby clinic from her home in Hilton and was well known in the community.

“The family suspects it was a heart attack. She had been to a heart specialist before, but she was healthy and played squash. There will be an autopsy [today] and hopefully it will put our hearts and minds at rest. It’s inexplicable.”

Sandra had worked at Grey’s and St Anne’s hospitals.

“We would like to the thank family and friends for their messages of support at this time,” said Neil.

Ezemvelo Wildlife runs the resort at Midmar and its spokesperson, Maureen Zimu, told The Witness that when Riekert’s husband, Johan, who had been driving the boat, pulled her out of the water she was unconscious.

She was rushed to the Howick Private Hospital where she died of a suspected heart attack.

Howick police spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley said it would be decided after a post-mortem whether further investigations would be necessary.
