Hoax hijacking: R30?000 fine or 4 years in jail

2013-01-12 00:00

THE New Germany man who lied to police about being hijacked and kidnapped and threatened with the rape of his wife by three armed men, was slapped with a R30 000 fine or four years in jail by the Pinetown Magistrate’s court.

Leon van Rensburg, who is now a convicted perjurer, was also found by psychological experts to have zero self-esteem.

He was fined R15 000 or two years’ imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice, and the same amount for perjury, court papers stated.

According to psychologist Beatrice Coetzee, who testified during the trial, Van Rensburg coped by fibbing his way out of situations.

In October, Van Rensburg disappeared after sending an SMS to his teenage daughter that said: “Help Hijacked”.

When police nabbed him in Cape Town, he claimed that he had been hijacked, blindfolded and kidnapped by three armed men who threatened to rape his wife and murder his family.

Rob Gardner, the family spokesperson, refused to comment yesterday, saying only that the family had had enough of the matter, before hanging up.
