Hockey: KZN Coastal and Inland placed fifth and sixth at IPT

2012-05-04 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Coastal and Inland hockey teams finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 11-team South Africa U21 Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) that took place in Port Elizabeth.

In a KwaZulu-Natal derby in the play-off for fifth and sixth places on the seventh and final day of the IPT in Pretoria, the KZN Coastal side prevailed 5-3 over KZN Inland.

The tournament was won by a Northern Blues side that included a number of former Maritzburg College players.

Free State were the silver medallists with Western Province third.

Coach Jethro Eustice’s Inland team can consider themselves unfortunate not to have finished higher.

They started well with victories against Witwatersrand (8-0) and Eastern Province (2-1) and a 2-2 draw with Southern Gauteng.

However, a 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Northerns — which was Inland’s only loss the entire tournament — was a key moment.

Inland then beat North West 5-2 before the play-off defeat to Coastal.

The Durban-based KZN Coastal started IPT with a 4-0 win over Namibia, who finished 11th, before beating North West 3-2.

Coastal then lost 2-0 to WP on day three and 2-0 to Free State on day four. The Durban lads recovered to beat Peninsula 2-0 and EP 3-2 before downing Inland in the classification match.

The South African U21 Women’s Interprovincial Tournament in Pretoria was won by Southern Gauteng with Free State the silver medallists.

KZN Inland ended 11th of the 12 teams, beating Witwatersrand 2-1 in the classification match.

Inland’s other results saw them lose 10-1 to third-placed finishers Western Province, go down 2-0 to Northern Blues, get edged 3-2 by Namibia, beat Wits 3-1, and lose 2-0 to Northern Blues B.

KZN Coastal finished ninth, having beaten Northern Blues B on a penalty shootout in the classification match after the scores were 2-2 at full-time.

In their other matches Coastal lost 2-1 to Peninsula, drew 1-1 with Northern Blues B (round-robin phase), lost 1-0 to Free State, lost 2-1 to EP, lost 4-2 to Southern Gauteng, and beat Wits 3-0.

In KZN Men’s Super League today, Maritzburg Varsity are scheduled to tackle PMB Collegians at 7 pm at the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf.
