2011-06-24 00:00

THE Maritzburg Varsity first team struck another blow to the hopes of their rivals, Durban Varsity, taking the KZN Men’s Super League crown with a 4-2 victory in the latest round of fixtures.

Beijing Olympian Geoff Abbott had a memorable match for the Pietermaritzburg-based side with four field goals in a match in which player/coach Darryn Gallagher’s charges led 3-2 at the break.

The Durban students, who had young SA midfielder Taine Paton in their ranks, replied through KZN Coastal Raiders forward Sihle Ntuli and Ryan Williams.

It was a typically hard-fought Varsity derby in which PMB umpires Braam van Wyk and Scott Tarr were kept busy.

Former Maritzburg College schoolboy Brian Gravett netted a remarkable hat-trick within a four-minute period via the penalty corner and penalty stroke route during Pinetown’s 10-1 drubbing of a disappointing PMB Collegians.

The KZN capital side were only 3-1 down at half-time before the wheels came off in the second stanza.

Title challengers Riverside beat their second string 7-3 after a marginal 3-2 lead at half-time.

The prolific Michael Botha bagged yet another harvest of goals that will go down well with head coach of the defending national champions, KZN Raiders, Brendon Carolan, while promising Northwood schoolboy Dale Moolman scored a hat-trick act for the second team squad.

In the remaining match Durban Varsity II beat Rovers’ line-up 3-1.

In a key women’s match between two ambitious sides KZN Raiders’ mentor Lennie Botha’s Rovers squad drew 3-3 with defending champions Riverside.

In another big match Durban Varsity beat Durban Collegians 4-2, while PMB Varsity were 3-0 winners against Rovers II, and PMB Collegians had two goals apiece from KZN Inland captain Robyn Pearson and Lara Rogers to account for their 4-0 defeat of Durban Collegians II.
