Hockey: Under-21 women in convincing win over Nigeria

2008-07-17 00:00

ON the last day of round-robin matches at the Junior World Cup Africa zone qualifiers in Cairo, the South African U21 women’s hockey team proved too strong for Nigeria U21 with a convincing 5-0 victory, writes JONATHAN COOK.

Roxy Turner, Sulette Damon (2), Nicole Kemp and Kelly Madsen scored the goals.

Assistant coach Jeanette Makkie said the SA women played well in a physically tough match and difficult conditions, with the Nigerians relying on booming upfield hits for most of the game.

Kenya’s men’s and women’s teams have withdrawn from the competition. No reason was forthcoming.

The South African men’s match last night was cancelled and SA set their sights on playing the winner of the match between Egypt and Ghana later in the evening to decide their opponents in tomorrow’s final.

It was probably a blessing in disguise for the SA U21 men as the match held no material interest for them, and picking up an injury against the physical, hard-running Kenyans would not be helpful with the final looming tomorrow.
