Hockey: Varsity crush rovers 5-2

2011-06-08 00:00

IN a tempestuous KZN Men’s Super League hockey game on Sunday, officiated by Beijing Olympics umpire Gary Simmonds and the highly regarded Erik Etsebeth, defending champions Maritzburg Varsity eventually ran out comfortable 5-2 winners over a combative Rovers.

Queensmead in Durban was the place with Beijing Olympian Geoff Abbott opening the scoring inside two minutes. Andrew Manson hit back shortly after — and so the scores remained until the changeover.

Varsity delivered a blow to Rovers’ solar plexus soon after the break when drag-flicker Karl Oftebro netted twice before lively SA U19 forward Darren Kimfley made it 4-1.

Rovers never recovered, although Jared Mitchell’s penalty stroke 17 minutes from time kept them interested.

But Abbott made it safe for the campus-based club near the end.

Varsity’s Justin Domleo and the Durban side’s Cameron Mackay and the player/coach, South African international Wade Paton, were all cited for yellow card sin-bin offences.

Another hard-fought affair saw Durban Varsity shade a plucky Pinetown 2-1 in another no-holds barred contest in which six players incurred the umpires’ wrath. Mike Wiggett (penalty corner) and Sihle Ntuli did the damage for the students.

Player/coach Gavin Jelley’s PMB Collegians line-up proved their mettle with a maiden 2011 season victory over a feisty Riverside II, the 6-2 scoreline reflecting in part the contributions of ruthless KZN Inland frontman Jelley (2) and Grant Christie (2).

Riverside accounted for Durban Varsity II with a 4-0 final score, the goals coming from KZN Coastal Raiders forwards Mike Botha (2), Beijing Olympian Marvin Harper and Mondli Dlamini.

In KZN Women’s SL action, PMB continued their good form with a 5-0 whitewash of Durban Collegians II, Sade Simons (2), Sarah Holland (2) and Tarryn Miskey all troubling the scorers.

The big one between neighbours Rovers and Durban Collegians was worth the watch with Cindy Botha, Farina Halstead and Nikki Mullins netting for the winners. The big one this weekend sees the PMB Varsity men taking on Riverside at Queensmead at 2 pm.

In other results — Women: Durban Varsity 2 Rovers II 0, Riverside 4 PMB Collegians 1.
