Hockey contest with global edge

2009-04-17 00:00

THE domestic hockey season resumes again today after the major schools were involved in a few matches at the end of last term and during the Easter holidays.

There will be widespread interest in the match at Maritzburg College, who host Hilton. The result will go a long way to establishing the top side in the province.

Hilton have just returned from a trip to Europe, where they played chukkas against largely under-18 club sides. The emphasis, however, was not on playing games, but on receiving coaching from some of the top coaches in world hockey.

College went eastwards, where they played three matches in Malaysia and five in Western Australia. They lost only one, their first on the tour, and claimed seven victories.

The opportunities the youngsters of the two schools have been given will lift their performances in today’s match, starting at 11 am on Papes.

Michaelhouse, traditionally the stronger team, host DHS, who have had a good start this year. DHS have played 11 matches, losing just three. Today’s match on Etheridge starts at 10.45 am.

Kearsney take on Westville at 10.45 am on Queensmead. Kearsney, after losing to DHS before the holidays, had a good Easter playing seven games, losing just one.

Westville will have to raise their game after the two matches last term where they lost to Hilton and Michaelhouse. This match should be a relatively easy win for Kearsney.

Fixtures (h/s first): Maritzburg College v Hilton; Michaelhouse v DHS; Westville v Kearsney; St Charles v Northwood
