Hockey development a growing success

RIVERSIDE Hockey Club in Durban North recently completed their second successful Riverside Reach Programme with 120 players participating.

Sponsored by Varsity College, this year’s initiative focused on Riverside youth members (ages 12 to 15) who showed interest in furthering their skills and overall knowledge of the game to take their talent to the next level.

Primarily from the Durban North community, players were given free resources and mentorship in a simulated senior team environment. This experience is designed to prepare them for hockey at senior level after school.

The programme was conceptualised, developed and organised by the Riverside Hockey Club executive committee — and this year saw seven Riverside squads competing over three weekends.

The squads consisted of three boys’ and four girls’ teams with around 20 players per squad, as well as the Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (INK) team.

Riverside Hockey Club closely support the INK team including via another Varsity College-sponsored programme Kit for KwaMashu Kids. Most of the participating INK squad won silver medals during their recent tour to Austria for the World Junior Games.

Riverside Hockey Club’s programme co-ordinator Derek Field said a key objectives of the programme was identifying promising boys and girls from the club’s U13 and U15 age groups and exposing them to a different standard and experience of hockey that they may not necessarily have had at school.

Field said the programme was growing in popularity and would become bigger and better. The club can be contacted at
