Hockey season finale

2013-06-20 00:00

THE winter hockey season ends with two matches, one today and the other on Saturday. Today’s match is the postponed game from almost two weeks ago between hosts Kearsney and Maritzburg College.

On Saturday, the return game between Hilton and Michaelhouse takes place at Michaelhouse.

On Tuesday evening, the members of the six KZN Inland hockey teams were capped at a ceremony held at Carter High School. Brandon Swart, the president of schoolboy hockey in the Inland region, explained to parents that Inland, the smallest of the hockey unions, is respected by other much bigger unions and they have always done well at the IPT.

In 2011, Inland U18 were the runners up at the tournament held at Kearsney and in 2010, the Inland U16s won the tournament held at Maritzburg College. Last year, the U18s placed seventh and the U16s sixth.

The U18A and B sides travel to Cape Town and the two U16 sides to Johannesburg. The U14 IPT is at Kearsney.

Jorgen Wikström from Maritzburg College is the captain of the U18A side.

College have another three games next term, but it is Kearsney’s last match this year and this could be the stimulus to produce their best hockey, but whether it will be good enough will depend on College.

Michaelhouse will be attempting to win the double after the surprise win against Hilton in the first match. They do have home ground advantage, but often this final game brings about further pressure, from a large crowd and being the last match for the matrics in both teams. The winner will be the side that absorb the pressure and play to their strengths.
