Holidays: KZN cabinet forces Ezemvelo to reopen Didima camp, saying tension over

2008-03-20 00:00

The KZN cabinet have pulled rank on Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and told them to reopen the Didima camp at Cathedral Peak.

This follows the closure of the camp this week following land tensions in the area, which led to the murder of a catering staff member at the camp.

In a statement, cabinet said that Safety MEC Bheki Cele gave the assurance that “all was under control and that tourists who visited the area were under no security threat”.

The statement referred to Ezemvelo as a “state entity”.

Ezemvelo yesterday confirmed the camp will re-open with immediate effect following the peace accord. “Ezemvelo staff at Didima camp who were instructed by their community leaders to remain at home, have returned to work and are currently getting the camp up and running once more.”

Spokesman Jeff Gaisford said they will contact all people who had confirmed bookings at Didima camp and who could not be accommodated elsewhere, to request them to reinstate their bookings.

He said they regretted any inconvenience to members of the public caused by the closure of the camp.
