Home gutted by fire, twice

2013-06-12 00:00

A FAMILY home in Sobantu has been gutted bytwo fires on the same day, and residents believe a faulty electricity box and cable were the cause.

Thokozani Mkhize told The Witness she was phoned on her way to work on Monday and informed that her house was on fire.

“At first it was the cabin [her bedroom, separate from the main house] that was burning. I had to come back and I was not sure what was happening at home. We all extinguished the fire,” said Mkhize.

She said her sister and her daughter had already pulled out some furniture.

“After the fire was extinguished we put everything back inside and I went to sleep at the neighbours’ home while my sister went to family friends.

“At about 9 pm, I came out of the neighbours’ house to see my house was in flames. I called everyone to come and help. The second fire was bigger and burned the house with everything in it,” said Mkhize.

She added that municipal officials came to the house and said the fault was with her meter box and a cable from the pole on the road.

“This pole has been reported several times by the neighbour as it sometimes just burns, but the municipality did nothing about it,” said Mkhize.

Attempts to get comment from the municipality were unsuccessful yesterday.
