Home owner shoots robber

2010-10-18 00:00

A KLOOF man shot dead an intruder who broke into his home and threatened him with a knife while he was watching rugby with his wife on Saturday evening.

It was later discovered the intruder and an accomplice had crashed a hijacked luxury car after they were found robbing another home nearby and were being chased by security officers. The intruder had fled the scene of the crash, escaping from the security officers.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the intruder gained entry by forcing open a glass door in the dining room of the Kloof Falls Road home.

“The suspect was allegedly armed with a knife and the home owner ran to his bedroom and fetched his licensed private firearm. He confronted the armed suspect who was still inside the house and fired several shots at the man … The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Naicker.

Naicker said police later discovered that the dead suspect and his accomplice, who is still on the run, had been on a crime spree using a BMW 1 Series. They had forced open an electric gate at a house in Douglas Road, Kloof, and had broken in.

“The internal alarm was activated and when the security company responded, they found the two suspects driving out of the property. The response vehicle gave chase and the suspects lost control of the vehicle, colliding into another vehicle at the corner of Douglas and Kloof Falls Road.

“The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. One suspect jumped over the fence into the property in Kloof Falls Road, which is where he forced the door open and was shot dead by the house owner,” said Naicker.

He said the suspects’ vehicle had false Gauteng Province registration plates and had been hijacked in Pinetown on October 11.

An assortment of jewellery was found in the suspects’ vehicle and a knife used by the dead suspect was seized.

Police are investigating cases of housebreaking and attempted house robbery. An inquest will be held into the suspect’s death.

Naicker said the dead suspect is about 35 years old and has not yet been identified. He said he was unable to release the name of the resident who shot the suspect dead, saying he had declined to speak to the media.
