Honoured for transforming nursing

A WESTVILLE professor this week received an honorary doctorate for her extensive work in the nursing sector’s transformation.

Professor Philda Nomusa Nzimande received the degree of doctor of philosophy from the University of South Africa at an event in Johannesburg on Tuesday evening.

The 78-year-old said she was very excited when she received the doctorate.

“It was a wonderful night for me because I have been an academic for over 19 years,” she said.

She holds five degrees, a professorship and runs her own nursing academy called Academy of Nursing Education and Health Training which opened its doors last year.

“I was the first black woman to receive a masters in nursing from a South African university and have worked as a midwife, nurse, educator, administrator, researcher, academic and businesswoman,” she said.

She said she came from humble beginnings and grew up in Camperdown.

Nzimande was honoured for her contribution to the nursing profession in South Africa in 2008 at the Dame Nita Barrow Memorial Lecture award in the UK and was the fourth recipient of the award.
