Hope: Cops help women in need

2008-10-29 00:00

Women in need are receiving help from the Town Hill police station and its communications and media liaison officer, Inspector Rahita Hajee.

With the help of sponsors Unilever and Densons, the officers hope to provide ongoing assistance to organisations like Project Gateway’s Esther House, which provides shelter for 40 women and children.

Inspector Hajee was present for the launch of a project, run by Ivon and June Grindley-Ferris, which distributes hampers of soap and toiletries to Esther House. The couple said the number of destitute women tends to increase this time of year because of due drug- and alcohol-related issues.

June Grindley-Ferris said materials for cleaning and hygiene are a priority in the care of HIV and Aids patients. The is also a need for baby food, nappies, children’s educational aids and clothing, and for volunteers with expertise in trauma counselling.
