Horror as baboon’s carcass found in Durban funeral home

2012-03-14 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Two Johannesburg businessmen got the shock of their lives last week when visiting a funeral home they own in Durban. They saw a baboon’s carcass lying alongside human bodies.

Fred Darke, the general manager for an insurance company and funeral business, is renting funeral parlour premises in Durban.

Darke said the staff at his mortuary in Durban phoned a few days ago to tell him that a coffin had dropped off, with a label stating that the body inside had swine flu and was not to be touched.

However, Darke’s staff looked anyway and to their horror discovered a baboon carcass.

The baboon had apparently been shot.

Darke and his sales manager, Andrew Cunningham-Moorat, said they were told by the man who owns the property that the baboon’s carcass was being used as a prop in a film. It had been embalmed.

Cunningham-Moorat said that when they contacted local police asking them to look into the matter, the police didn’t know what to do.

KwaZulu-Natal conservation authorities are now investigating the incident, said Cunningham-Moorat.
