Hospice to close ‘unprofitable’ Northdale shop

2008-03-07 00:00

A business decision to close the doors of a Hospice shop in Northdale has been lamented by those for whom it was a source of cheap household goods, but Hospice says not enough people bought from it.

Community development supporter Wayne Erradu said the shop was like “a home to the poorest of the poor” and a place where “they felt human too”.

Another local said that despite the decision to shut down the business, “we will do whatever we can to keep this shop open”.

Judy Coghlan, manager of income generation at Hospice, said the shop in the BJ Shopping Centre will close on March 15.

She thanked the owner of the centre for his generosity and support of Hospice.

She said the shop was intended as a business venture, to raise as much money for Hospice as possible for patient care programmes, and that the shop has not been viable for some time.

She said most of the patients who approach Hospice for care come from the northern areas, and that they will continue to focus care on the area.
