Hospital buzzes as bitten man brings python with him

2014-04-17 00:00

NORTHDALE Hospital’s casualty unit was buzzing yesterday as patients strained to see a man who had survived a python bite and sneak a look at the massive python that was later killed.

Mfanifani Sikhakhane (58) from a farm near New Hanover came to hospital with his friend, only known as Maxwell. Sikhakhane carried in a plastic bin the body of the massive dead python that was killed after it bit him through his gumboots yesterday morning.

He had tooth marks on his leg.

He was treated quickly by the hospital staff to prevent more chaos in the casualty department.

Security guards had a tough time trying to prevent members of the public from getting into the unit.

Once he had been tended to, he left the hospital in a rush to avoid the curious crowds.

Nomonde Ndaba, who happened to be at the casualty unit, told The Witness that the python and the man who survived its attack, created quite a stir.

“I was shocked to see such a big snake with my own eyes. The sight prompted staff and members of the public to run around casualty in their attempts to see the man and the snake. Some were scared like me, while others were not,” said Ndaba.

Hospital spokesperson Mandisa Dlamini, said they had to treat the man fast. “He was helped with his wounds but was not admitted as they were not so deep,” said Dlamini.
