Hot hockey at Riverside

HOCKEY fans in Durban can enjoy the ideal start to the December holidays when Riverside Hockey Club in Durban North hosts Argentina’s national men’s side on Wednesday, December 11, at 6 pm.

The Argentinians are in the province on a five-match tour against South Africa and Riverside hits off the occasion as the venue for the opening match.

It should be a series of inspired showdowns as the 11th-ranked Argentinians attempt to upset the 12th-ranked SA team, particularly after the latter’s recent success in winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Kenya last month.

Riverside is expected to be well represented, with at least five of their 1st team players on the astro. The SA team will be announced later this week, but Riverside has brothers Wade and Taine Paton, Tim Drummond, Keegan Robinson and Gowan Jones in the squad.

With such strong representation, it’s no surprise that Riverside’s 1st men’s team won the KZN Super League title for the second successive year.

Club chairperson Wayne Phillips was rightfully chuffed his turf would be hosting such an important clash, saying the announcement had created plenty of excitement among local hockey players and supporters.

“We are more than thrilled to be hosting the opening match of the series and having hockey of such high calibre on our doorstep.

“It’s an indication of the fantastic facilities we have at the club,” said Phillips. “It’s a great time of the year to have such a match and it’s the perfect Christmas gift for the Durban North hockey community.

“We encourage people of all ages, from around the province, to join us for what promises to be an evening of top-class, unforgettable hockey.”

Riverside also hosts a Junior Open Day on the day of the match for players aged eight to 13. Mini games have been organised to introduce youngsters to the basics of the game.

Entry on the day is R20 per vehicle, while all senior Riverside hockey members enjoy free access.
