Hot off the press … cool way to learn

An acclaimed newspaper for children, called The Times I Am Living In, is winning new readers in Zulu.

The newspaper is the brainchild of Duncan Guy.

After it became a hit among pupils in schools across the country, Guy was asked to translate the copy first into Afrikaans and two months ago into Zulu.

The Zulu teacher at Athlone Primary School in Pietermaritzburg, Khanyisile Mhlamvu, said: "We don’t have Zulu textbooks. I find this paper very helpful and the students are excited when I read the stories to them.

"It has helped greatly in improving their vocabulary and they just can’t seem to get enough of it."

The aim is to introduce children to news and current affairs in an easy-to-read format with illustrations provided by pupils across the country whose schools subscribe.

Guy used to work the graveyard shift at Sapa, the South African Press Association, and decided to write a paper for his seven-year-old son. Word of the newspaper spread and soon Guy was approached by numerous schools wanting copies.

The paper is distributed to schools twice weekly and consists of sections familiar to adult readers — world news, Africa news, sport, business, environment features and a "today in history" page.

The newspaper is child-friendly, and free of frightening stories.
