Hotspur still keen on SA’s Khumalo

2011-05-26 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — It seems Bongani Khumalo’s Tottenham Hotspur career could still be on the up.

The English media are reporting that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will sell a clutch of players in the next transfer window, as he looks to reduce the club’s wage bill and make room for a few quality signings.

A list of players who will probably be shown the way out of White Hart Lane has been compiled, and Khumalo’s name does not appear to be on it.

There had been concern for Khumalo after he was sent on loan to Preston North End without ever kicking a ball for the Spurs’ first team, and after full Cameroon international defender Sebastien Bassong demanded to leave after being frozen out.

But it looks as if Khumalo will be around next season to fight for his breakthrough in English top-flight football.

Not so lucky will be Bassong — who is looking for a new club already — and a host of other players with big-name casualties likely.

One of Roman Pavlyuchenko or Jermain Defoe is expected to be sacrificed from the front-line.

Ben Alnwick, Alan Hutton, Kyle Naughton, David Bentley, Jermaine Jenas, Wilson Palacios, Niko Kranjcar, Jamie O’Hara, Giovani dos Santos, Robbie Keane and goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes are all likely to be sent on their way by Redknapp.

Khumalo could be joined at Spurs by newcomers like West Ham’s Scott Parker, Blackpool’s Charlie Adam and Roger Johnson from Birmingham City.
