House Burns: Arson over stolen cash suspected

2012-02-21 00:00

A HOUSE next to the Umgungundlovu FET College caught alight and suffered extensive damage yesterday.

Msunduzi fire department divisional officer Themba Mkhulisa said that when the fire-fighters arrived to put out the blaze in Pietermaritz Street, most of the house was already in flames and the roof was caving in.

He said the department’s investigation team would determine the cause of the fire.

“We do not know what exactly happened when we were called out, but I can say this is a municipal building. When we arrived here the occupants were coming out. The investigation team will determine the cause of the fire,” he said.

He was unable to confirm whether the occupants were legal tenants.

One of the occupants, a visibly distraught Nokwanda Zuma, alleged that the fire had started by a man who accused them of stealing money and his knife.

Another tenant said the man had accused them of stealing R70 and threatened to burn down the house.

“We did not take him seriously, though. He repeated that he’d burn down the place and we would have to find somewhere else to stay.”

The occupants said they were not sure who owned the house and that they believed the owner had died.

They said they had lost all their possessions.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said a criminal case had not been opened.
