House gutted by fire

2014-04-12 00:00

A HOUSE at the Montrose Mews simplexes in Pietermaritzburg was gutted by fire yesterday afternoon.

It was not clear how the fire started, but witnesses said it started in the house of an elderly woman who lives with her daughter. She was transported to hospital suffering from suspected smoke inhalation. It was not immediately clear who rescued her.

“The owner of the house was not there; his mother and sister live here. Their two dogs were also taken out,” said a neighbour who did not want to be named.

“But the house is damaged extensively; they will have to take this house down and rebuild it; the walls are cracked; even the tiles on the floor will be cracked.”

Part of the roof had collapsed and the windows were broken.

A fireman at the scene said: “This was a bad fire, just look [at the house].”

Essack Khan of Msunduzi Fire said one person was taken to hospital.

“We sent two vehicles there. When the officers arrived, the fire was well alight and they took a short time to put it out. They also managed to restrict it from spreading to other houses.”
