‘House of Horrors’ mother looks haggard in dock

THE wife of the so-called “Springs Monster” gripped her black and white fake fur coat in long-nailed hands as she made her first appearance in the regional court yesterday.

The woman wore a blue sweat suit, a grey and blue scarf and the dirty jacket. She entered the court slowly from the cells.

The gallery was filled with media and the sound of cameras appeared to startle the woman, who searched for familiar faces before turning to look at the magistrate.

However, there was only one family member present to support her.

The woman showed no emotion as she stared straight ahead during her brief appearance.

Her blonde hair, cut in layers, was matted, while dark circles beneath her eyes told of a lack of sleep in the holding cell.

Almost two weeks ago, sister paper Beeld spoke to the woman, who said she was ready to care for her five children. At the time, her hair and nails were neat and her clothes immaculate.

She was arrested on Monday afternoon at her family’s home in Geduld, Springs.

She is charged with defeating the ends of justice after she declined to sign her statements about what had happened in the so-called house of horrors and decided she would not testify against her husband.

He is accused of imprisoning and abusing their five children for years.

Magistrate Roy le Roux said yesterday that the woman is now the second accused in the case against the father.

Besides the charge of defeating the ends of justice, she also faces charges of attempted murder, child abuse, obstruction of justice and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutor Gcobani Lungu asked for a postponement before the woman applies for bail and the case was adjourned until next Tuesday.

“On July 1 you can formally apply for bail, but until then you must remain in custody,” Le Roux told the woman. She is being detained at the Johannesburg prison.
