House robbery gang foiled

2008-06-12 00:00

A Montrose family were saved by a panic button from having their house ransacked after a gang of robbers possibly connected to the notorious “five-minute syndicate” jumped over a gate and attempted to enter at lunchtime on Tuesday.

Mrs Chetty of Montrose Drive (who did not want to be further identified) said she and her husband were at work and the children at school at the time. Only the housekeeper was at home.

The gang, driving a white Golf with a Durban registration, rang the bell and asked for directions.

Told they were in the wrong area, they asked whose house it was, and asked to speak to Mr Chetty.

“After she told them that all the Chettys were away, three of them jumped over the gate and proceeded to the main door. But our housekeeper moved fast to press the panic button, and they ran back to jump over the gate, into their car and disappeared,” said Chetty.

A Montrose resident said about eight police vehicles patrolled the area searching for the Golf.

The Witness learnt that men in a white Golf robbed a house in Ashburton about 30 minutes after the Chetty incident.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram could not confirm the Ashburton incident yesterday.
