How Odd: Hungry burglar cleans up and clears off

2009-03-26 00:00

A Hilton burglar kindly washed the plate he stole a steak from before departing with what could have been the makings of a pleasant picnic - a bottle of red wine, a carton of drinking yoghurt and a small bun.

Dr Mike Mostovski (39) of Devonshire Lane in Hilton told The Witness yesterday he thought he was going crazy when the steak he reached for in the fridge on Sunday had disappeared.

Mostovski said he returned home on Sunday morning and was looking forward to cooking the steak for lunch.

"I couldn't find it, but knew I had left it in the fridge."

Trying to puzzle out what had happened, he then saw the plate on which the steak had lain washed and left to drain on the sink.

"Then I realised something was wrong. The plate still had some marks and grease on it, but my wife or I would have washed it properly."

The puzzling thing for Mostovski is that there was no forced entry. "Either they used some device to unlock and relock the door, or it was a tiny person who squeezed in through the burglar bars." He said police who attended the scene later said that some humans have an extraordinary capacity to fit through small gaps.

So how did Mostovski, who works at the Natal Museum in the field of natural sciences, feel when he realised his steak dinner was gone?

"I was a bit disappointed," he admits.

There have been no arrests.
