How odd: Fire chief sprays air freshener to save the day after smoke scare at Pietermaritzburg City Hall

2009-03-26 00:00

There was a stink in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall yesterday morning, and no, it was not through the airing of dirty linen.

It turns out a staff member forgot his food heating in a microwave oven.

Shortly before the executive committee (Exco) meeting started, smoke and a terrible stench permeated the corridors of city hall.

The fire brigade was summoned and firemen fanned out throughout the building.

Exco members, despite the discomfiting smell, soldiered on with the business of the day. They stopped proceedings briefly when a fireman stepped into the chamber.

“Will we have to evacuate?” asked the mayor.

“No” said the fireman, “the problem was a microwave burning and it has been sorted out.”

A relieved mayor proclaimed the situation safe and the meeting proceeded.

However, left carrying the can was the city hall’s chief fire marshall, Lungelo Sithole, who spent his morning armed with aerosal cans spraying air freshener up and down the corridors of Pietermaritzburg’s most famous building.
