How odd: Sir Edwin gets the boot

2009-04-08 00:00

Johan Pretorius of The Witness sister newspaper South Coast Fever reports that Hibiscus Coast ward 1 councillor Edwin Bezuidenhout has been expelled by the Democratic Alliance, although DA KZN leader Mike Ellis would not comment officially on the report.

Bezuidenhout, who at times uses the name Sir Edwin Bezuidenhout when conducting his private business, was subjected to a lengthy internal DA disciplinary process.

In April last year a multi-party Hibiscus Coast Council committee appointed to investigate Bezuidenhout’s conduct, recommended to the MEC for Local Government that he be relieved of his duties as councillor for breaking the council’s code of conduct.

Fever asked Bezuidenhout for comment, but he said he had nothing to say.

Bezuidenhout clashed with municipal officials who accused him of abusing his position as councillor. In turn, he accused the municipal officials of taking bribes. Bezuidenhout, who is an architectural technician, was also accused of misrepresenting his qualifications, and of doing shoddy work. A council inquiry vindicated the officials, but found Bezhuidenhout had abused his position.
