Howick doctor honoured for service

2010-07-01 00:00

DR John Hyslop was awarded the Freedom of Howick yesterday in recognition of over 50 years of service to the people of Howick.

Hyslop, who recently turned 80, received a certificate of recognition and the Freedom of Howick during a full council meeting yesterday afternoon. “This award is to acknowledge the contribution Dr Hyslop has made to the health fraternity over the years and for his service to the community of Howick and the surrounds,” said uMngeni Mayor Edward Dladla when presenting the award.

In thanking the mayor and the assembled council for the award, Hyslop said: “I’ve done what I can and thanks to the good Lord I’ve been able to do that longer than most doctors.”

Hyslop said his family have lived in the area for over a century. “Their achievements outshine my own and I’m happy to accept this honour on behalf of my family.”

Hyslop began practising in January 1958 and is still working as a general practitioner. Over the years he has also been Howick district surgeon, Sarmcol medical officer, as well the driving force behind the creation of the Howick Private Hospital.

“Dr Hyslop presents the best in a family doctor — always caring, always available and loved by his many patients,” was how he was described in one of the many letters written to the uMngeni Municipality in motivation of yesterday’s honour.
