Howick pupil wins Horizon maths exam

TO be number one in a class test is one thing, but James Webb of Howick Prep has put a new spin on the term “whiz kid” by securing top spot in a national maths examination.

James (13) won the Horizon Mathematics Competition, ahead of about 17 000 entrants from 164 schools.

The competition has been running for the past eight years.

This year’s award ceremony was held at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, where the top candidates were announced.

James received various prizes from sponsors, including a laptop.

The seventh grader has been described by his teachers as “the loveliest boy” and an all rounder.

“He is a good sportsman, an excellent academic and he has the lead role in our end of year play. He is just the nicest kid,” said one teacher.

Manor Garden in Durban also helped KZN shine by taking the second place spot in the competition.

James has recently returned from Hong Kong with three of his schoolmates who were chosen to represent South Africa in a World Mathematics Competition.

While he might not have featured prominently in that competition, which was largely composed of pupils from elite and world renowned mathematical academies, Howick Prep believes the experience was a learning curve for their young maths enthusiast.
