Howick trader goes missing

2012-02-02 00:00

A PUZZLING clue to missing Howick supermarket owner Nuresh Mohanlal’s whereabouts is his locked car.

It was found abandoned near the Midmar Dam off-ramp on the N3 highway on Tuesday night.

His valuables were still inside, his brother Audesh Parboolal told The Witness.

“We noticed he was not home at about 8 pm [on Tuesday],” said Parboolal.

“When we started ringing his cellphone and no one answered, we began to suspect that something was not okay,” he said.

The family traced his steps and found his car at the Midmar off-ramp.

“The car was parked and locked but the boot opened,” said Parboolal.

“His cellphone was inside and so were his wallet and paperwork from his office.

“Only the car keys were missing,” Parboolal added.

A police team led by Lieutenant Jack Haskins and helped by Mohanlal’s family and members of the Howick West community scoured the area, including Midmar Dam.

A police source close to the investigation said there were no signs of a robbery or a hijacking.

The source added that Mohanlal (40) had set the alarm at his supermarket and left shortly before 7 pm with three employees whom he dropped off along the route on his way home.

He never arrived.

Mohanlal’s family rule out any possibility of his having committed suicide, saying he had neither problems nor enemies.

His tearful wife, Raakhee, appealed to anyone who knew his whereabouts to inform the police.

“We want him back safe and sound for the sake of his children and family,” she said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a missing person’s report had been lodged with Howick police station.

Anyone with information about Mohanlal should call Warrant Officer Werner Klaasen at 033 239 9343 or 082 725 0920.
