Hunt for shooter of female cop

2013-07-17 00:00

POLICE say investigations into the murder of a policewoman in Durban are continuing and that it is too early to tell what the motive behind the killing might be.

On Monday evening, Constable Gugulathu Ximba (33), who was attached to Port Security Services, was gunned down as she entered her home in Umlazi J section.

“She was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her service pistol was also taken during a shooting. She was shot four times and sustained two gunshot wounds to her neck, chest and right arm,” said police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said: “A case of murder was opened at Bhekithemba SAPS and is being investigated by the Hawks.

“We are confident they are capable of investigating this case successfully. I want to express my sincere condolences to the family and assure them that we will do everything within our control to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.”

Ngobeni said illegal firearms continue to contribute to police killings, as well as the murder of community members, and that any illegal firearms must be reported to the police.
