Hurt cows: SPCA lays charges

2010-06-03 00:00

THE SPCA has laid charges of cruelty to animals against people who hacked cows belonging to a Kokstad farmer on Saturday.

Eight of the 37 wounded animals were put down because they were hamstrung.

The cows’ owner, Allistar McDougal of Driefontein farm, has already opened a case of malicious damage to property with the Kokstad police. The charges include the burning of his 150 hay bales, worth about R45 000.

A statement from the SPCA said cruelty to animals charges were laid under the Animal Protection Act.

No one has been arrested as the perpetrators are not known.

Police in the area suspect that the violent attacks on the cattle may have been in revenge, the statement added.

Anyone with information should contact Inspector Douglas Wolhuter of the SPCA in Kokstad at 082 927 8190.
