Husband accused of ‘hit’

2009-08-27 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man, Nireshan Sokalingam (31), appeared briefly in court yesterday in connection with a charge that he conspired to have his wife, Kamal Sokalingam, murdered.

Sokalingam of Silver Road in Northdale was not asked to plead to the charge, and magistrate Divesh Mootheram adjourned the hearing to September 21 for a formal bail application.

The charge sheet alleges that Sokalingam conspired with Delani Ngubo between May last year and August this year to murder Kamal Sokalingam.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said Sokalingam was arrested after a man who claimed he had been hired to carry out the murder came to the police.

It is alleged that the “hit” had initially been planned for August 14, but was put off until August 23 when the victim was supposed to be alone at home.

The alleged assassin had allegedly been promised the keys to the victim’s house.

Two days before the murder was allegedly due to take place he went to the police and reported the matter.

The motive is alleged to have been a desire to collect life insurance money, from which the killer was also due to be paid.
