Husband of murdered Willowfountain teacher charged

2014-05-01 00:00

THE husband of a Willowfountain teacher found stabbed and beaten to death appeared in court yesterday and was charged with her murder, to the relief of her family after he was released last week apparently due to police negligence.

Simangele Angelina Latha-Zondi (44) was found in her bedroom with stab wounds after her husband, Bongani Anthony Zondi, handed himself over to police in the early hours of April 21.

Zondi appeared in court last week but was released after the case was not enrolled due to insufficient evidence.

Latha-Zondi’s father, Petros Latha, told The Witness then that he was deeply disappointed.

“I buried my child but the suspect was walking free on the streets because of police carelessness. They are visiting the house several times now, looking for evidence.

“If they did their work properly the first time, we wouldn’t be having these problems now,” he said.

Yesterday, Latha said he was relieved to know that Zondi had been subpoenaed and had appeared in court, where he was remanded.

Latha-Zondi died after she was stabbed and beaten while her children were asleep in another room.

She had been newly appointed to teach at Bhekuximba High School in the Vulindlela area.

Zondi will be back in court on May 14 for a bail application.
