IEC: young people boost new voter registrations

2011-03-07 00:00

IN what was an otherwise successful final voter registration weekend, rain on Friday washed away a bridge leading to a voting station in the Bergville area, causing the voting station to be closed on Saturday.

KwaZulu-Natal Independent Elections (IEC) Operations Manager, Ntombifuthi Masinga, confirmed that a voting station at Senzokuhle School in the Bergville area was not opened for the whole day on Saturday due to the bridge being washed away.

“A temporary bridge had to be build for our staff to access the voting station on Sunday. Besides this incident, everything went well in our 4 358 voting stations across the province,” Masinga said.

The IEC’s latest figures show more than 600 000 people had visited voting stations on Saturday.

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Mosotho Moepya said this is a 50% improvement in comparison to the last registration weekend held at the beginning of last month. “We are excited that approximately 40% of the visitors were people who registered for the first time and 80% of them were young people under the age of 30,” said Moepya.
