IFP youth leader arrested for NFP hostel shootings

THE arrest of an IFP Youth Brigade leader in connection with the wounding of two National Freedom Front (NFP) members in the kwaMashu hostel 10 days ago has been hailed as a warning to criminals.

Sifiso Vincent Khumalo was arrested on Friday and appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of attempted murder.

Khumalo was remanded in police custody until March 3. The arrest came after Zama Zungu and Nomusa Nhlengana were shot on March 15. Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said more arrests were expected.

Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu said the arrest would send a clear message to criminals that the law would always catch up with them. “Police are working around the clock to [find] those responsible for the kwaMashu hostel shootings and we urge the locals to work with them so that those behind this violence could be put behind the bars once and for all,” Mchunu said.

Since the shooting of Nhlengana and Zungu, two other local leaders of the NFP and IFP were shot dead last week, sparking fears of political violence in the hostel.

Mchunu said all avenues will be explored to bring about peace and stability through a negotiated settlement.

“We urge local leaders to work for peace … It is only through dialogue that we should resolve this matter as conflict breeds murder and hatred,” he said.
