IPT hockey: Jelley dances merry jig at Border’s expense

2010-08-26 00:00

THE imposing figure of Gavin Jelley will haunt the Border back four’s dreams for quite some time. The unorthodox striker banged three past bemused goalkeeper Curt Nel as KZN Inland did their title chances a power of good with an 8-0 victory on day three of the SA Men’s Inter Provincial Hockey Tournament in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

Jelley’s hat-trick of action goals inside 18 first-half minutes blew Border away. He was backed up by an on-song penalty corner battery that put two past the unfortunate Nel, who was included in place of goalkeeping colleague Darren Venter after the latter had leaked six the day before against Northerns Blues.

Dalan Phillips, Karl Oftebro, Jethro Eustice, Duzo Khanyile and Tommy Hammond bagged the rest.

The result leaves Inland needing to put in another winning performance against coach Dave Viney’s most impressive Northerns Blues in their last pool match today to stand a chance of making the semi-finals. Blues accounted for Border 6-1 before their 2-2 draw with KZN Coastals yesterday.

Said Inland coach Charlie Pereira, “We stuck to our game plan and knew we could press the Border guys at the back; we stole the ball effectively and by closing them down they couldn’t release the ball to their quick forwards too often.

“We found a lot of space down the right channel, which we exploited well. We talked about hitting the top of the circle and letting it go, and that’s what we did today.

“Gavin’s a great finisher, he so unorthodox, and Duzo’s work rate was exceptional,” added Pereira. “But it was a great team effort and our penalty corners, which cost us points in the 3-1 defeat by KZN Coastals on Tuesday, were much better.”

Pereira added that Darryn Gallagher, who is captain of the team, deserves much of the credit. “Gally’s got a great hockey mind and did all the groundwork with the players.”
