Ian Palmer takes over as Santos coach

2013-01-08 00:00

CAPE TOWN — National First Division side Santos have appointed Ian Palmer as their new coach, the club confirmed yesterday.

Palmer was earlier this month axed as coach of Absa Premiership side Black Leopards, but was not out of work for long after being snapped up by Santos, who were seeking a replacement for the departed Dutch coach Mart Nooij, according to the supersport.com website.

“Following a substandard start to the NFD season, Santos chairperson [Goolam Allie], believes a change in the management may reignite the once formidable PSL side and spark hope of a comeback, trailing the leaders by only 11 points,” the club said in a statement.

“Having played himself, and having coached a number of South African based sides, his knowledge of the local game is most definitely going to be an advantage to The Peoples’ Team heading into the second round.”

Palmer also has coaching experience with Maritzburg United in the top flight and has worked as a TV analyst for SuperSport.
