Johannesburg — Singing and eating were Mama Afrika’s two favourite activities.

And that’s how Miriam Makeba (76) died on Sunday night in Italy — first she sang Pata Pata at a concert, then she had a meal at a restaurant. Shortly afterwards, she collapsed, said Cynthia Tshaka, a spokeswoman for the family. “We’re so glad she could go like this. She was fortunate,” said Zenzi Mkhize, Makeba’s granddaughter, at Makeba’s Johannesburg home.

Music producer Godfrey Nzuzawas, who lives on Makeba’s property, said: “She always sang as she walked through the house. … She cooked all the meals …”
