‘Idols’ runner-up entertains PMB fans tonight

MARK Haze, the 2011 Idols runner-up, and local singer-songwriter Erin Fourie will be performing at the Red Door in Pietermaritzburg tonight.

Haze’s dream, since he was a kid, has been to perform in front of thousands, recording songs, having them played on many radio stations and touring many places to express his art of music. This dream has come true.

Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran and Queen captured Haze’s attention at an early age. He could be found belting out the hits in front of the hi-fi, often making the living room his stage for performances to family and friends.

At the age of seven, he was captivated by musical instruments and, even though he enrolled to study piano at school, he spent hours negotiating with his parents to buy him a guitar. He also developed a keen interest in blues, and the music of Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Muddy Waters. Haze’s teenage years were spent in the company of his father’s LP collection of rock music, which in turn sparked a desire to write his own songs.

In 2010, after a number of line-up changes with his band 12th Avenue, Haze went to the United States on a part-holiday, part-record-label hunt. His wife, Shelley, convinced him to enter The American Idol Experience — a shortened day-long version of the television show. He impressed the judges and ended up winning.

Haze was given a golden ticket to enter American Idol and was fast-tracked to perform for the judges without having to brave mile-long queues. Due to financial constraints, however, he wasn’t able to pursue this opportunity, but the win gave him the confidence to enter South African Idols. He came second and was a firm favourite with local audiences.

His debut album, Where Angels Fear To Fly, was released in June 2012 and has already spawned two hits. Haze continues to tour throughout South Africa, along with his band members: Bjorn Faree, Gareth Haze and Brian Lee.

Fourie, meanwhile, has returned to her roots, performing acoustic folk while studying for her Master’s degree in drama.

Tickets for the gig cost R40. Doors open at 7.30 pm and the performances start at 9 pm. Inquiries: 082 975 4473.
