Igesund says Downs can still close the gap before Christmas

2007-12-19 00:00

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund is confident his side will close the gap on his former team, Ajax Cape Town, as the PSL heads to the Christmas recess.

Sundowns are 10 points behind the leaders and face Platinum Stars tonight and then Free State Stars before the recess.

“If we win our next game we can close the gap by seven points and if we win both, then the gap will be four points,” Igesund said. “This is our aim before the league goes into recess and we can do this, I am confident we can turn the tide and end this year on a good note.”

Igesund acknowledged the strength of Stars whom they face at the Loftus Stadium for their final home game of this year.

“They’re a hard-running team, very quick and quite physical too. They have good players who can cause problems and will obviously want to impress the new coach, so we are expecting them to come at us, they have a point to prove.”

•Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

•Each time top PSL scoring sensation James Chamanga nets another goal for Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt probably cringes in embarrassment.

Hunt, coincidentally, was coach of The Birds before switching allegiance to the M-Net owned Premier League club, but the true reason for feeling a pang of discomfort over Chamanga’s scoring spree is that one of his first decisions after the former Swallows mentor joined SuperSport was to dispense with the services of the Zambian international who has recorded eight goals in his last three games.

While these quirks of misjudgement are not unique in the hurly-burly world of soccer management, the magnitude of Chamanga’s goal spree.

And with this in mind, the tricky fixture against Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban tonight assumes a greater degree of importance for the SuperSport coach.

One of the surprise packets of the PSL season, the silky-smooth Arrows are particulalry lethal opponents on their home turf in Durban, with their defence, if anything, a little suspect and providing Hunt’s SuperSport with some hope of securing an invaluable away result.
