Illegal election posters to be removed

2008-11-05 00:00

Electioneering has begun and political parties’ posters have been tied to lamp posts and plastered on walls and buildings all over Pietermaritzburg.

Posters stuck on walls are illegal, the chairman of the Msunduzi Municipality’s elevations and signs sub-committee, Patrick Moon, said yesterday.

The ANC has pasted posters adverstising this weekend’s voter registration drive on a retaining wall near the Liberty Midlands Mall and at Publicity House, alongside adverts for abortions and entertainment events.

“We have instructed the ANC’s regional office about these particular posters and they are trying to identify who put them up.

“I have sent an instruction from within the council that the posters be removed,” said Moon.

The council is obviously concerned about the contribution these posters have made to the decay of urban structures, he said.

Moon warned people who put up posters without council permission that they will be prosecuted.

The council will soon launch a drive to bring the offenders to book, Moon added.

“Our legal section is drafting the extent of punishment that should be imposed on the perpetrators,” he added.
