Illegal strike: 36 held for stoning vehicles

2011-08-26 00:00

SOME 36 employees from Timber Door Manufacturers (TDM), who were involved in an illegal strike yesterday, have been arrested for damaging cars and contravening the court order that prevented them from striking.

The TDM employees were striking outside TDM company premises in Chesterfield Road, Pietermaritzburg, from 6:40 am.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said that between 150 and 200 strikers were burning tyres, preventing the free flow of traffic and stoning vehicles in Chesterfield Road.

It is alleged that they stoned five cars of staff that were not part of the strike. Sources who did not want to be named said the group went against the court order in striking and they stoned cars of innocent people.

Jeevan said “Police fired stun grenades to disperse the crowd and 36 male suspects were arrested.”

They were charged with public violence, malicious damage to property and obstruction of traffic, and will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court shortly. — Witness Reporter.
