‘I’m divorced’ texts Zuma

“I’M divorced.”

With these words, sent in a Whatsapp message to a Weekend Witness reporter. President Jacob Zuma’s son, Edward Zuma, confirmed yesterday that he had split from his wife.

Zuma told the Weekend Witness that, “it’s official and confirmed” — he and his wife, Phumelele Shange, had finally split after a turbulent three-year marriage.

It is not clear when divorce papers were filed or finalised, but the Weekend Witness understands the couple had been living in separate houses for months now.

Two weeks ago, The Witness reported that the marriage was on the rocks, but Zuma would not be drawn to comment about the relationship at that stage.

Several sources believed the couple’s marriage was over after Shange moved out of their Durban North marital home recently.

The couple would have celebrated three years together last month.

Zuma and Shange tied the knot in a lavish wedding at Tala Game Reserve near Camperdown in October 2011. The wedding was attended by 500 of South Africa’s political and business elite.

Months after their extravagant ceremony, it emerged that Zuma had borrowed a stainless steel wedding ring from Mark Gold Jewellers for the ceremony because he did not have the money to pay for the one commissioned for the ceremony.

Zuma was also taken to court for failing to pay Paul Mann for his R2,7 million wedding bill.

When contacted for comment, Zuma admitted via Whatsapp that he and his wife had divorced, but would not be drawn to discuss the reasons for the breakdown in the marriage.

Shange’s phone rang unanswered.

A source close to the couple was shocked to learn of the divorce.

“All I know is that they have been going through serious problems and they should have sorted them out sooner. I am not surprised; she had put up with so much.

“She is the kind of woman that is patient and I am sure she could not take it any more,” said the source.

A source at the homestead said: “We have not met with ubaba [Zuma] to discuss their relationship. I am not sure what is happening; I am not sure whether they are still together or not.”
