2012-04-23 00:00

A POLICE officer from Imbali is recovering in hospital after he was attacked and shot twice near his home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Constable Mandisa “Benzes” Mbense, who was stationed at Mpophomeni, was shot in the arm and in the stomach.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition and spent part of yesterday morning in the intensive care unit.

Police spokesperson Lolly Moodley told The Witness that Mbense was walking home from a local tavern at about 2 am when he was attacked.

Assailants had allegedly followed him from near the tavern.

He said that as Mbense was attacked as he neared his home.

“They demanded that he handed over his firearm, said Moodley.

“At this stage we do not know whether he was shot with his firearm.

“He was shot twice — once in the arm and in the stomach.

Moodley said Mbense was found by his father who called the police, “and the officer was taken to hospital”.

A senior police officer in Mpophomeni said yesterday afternoon that Mbense had been discharged from ICU and was recovering.

Attempts to verify this with the hospital were unsuccessful.
